Jessie Solomon (Spring 2013) - UF


Jessie was a student volunteer with a background in wildlife ecology and conservation.

Savannah Elliott (Spring 2013 - Spring 2014) - UF


Savannah was a work-study English student at UF.  She has been participating in various research projects to ascertain “best practices” for plant tissue storage for the purposes of DNA usage and for the barcoding of Florida plants.

Emily Schwartz (Fall 2010 - Spring 2011) - UF


Emily was a Biology student at UF.  She participated in a research project to study the phylogeny of the New World species of Kosteletzkya.  Emily wrote a senior thesis on this subject and was awarded an award of excellence by the biology department for that thesis (see left photo).

Zack Guignardi (Spring 2014) - UF


Zack was an undergraduate student in horticulture.  He has been involved in the barcoding and floristic study of the Ordway-Swisher Biological Station.

These are some of the undergraduate students that have worked with me on research projects here at SIU for the 2015-2016 academic year, including Weston Biver, Andrew Bleich, Kristina Jordan, Salama Matimbwa, Gavin Stonehouse, Will Vignovich, and Kyle Wright.  A special thanks to Andrew Bleich for his UGA work in the lab.  And another special thanks to Annie Bileck and Kristina Jordan for their UGA work in the herbarium with Dr. Garwood.

Summer 2016, Special Congratulations to...

-Undergraduate students Austin Szubryt and Kristina Jordan for receiving REACH grants from CURCA (SIU). 

-Austin Szubryt for receiving a Botanical Society of America research award. 

-MS student Nick Flowers for receiving the Graduate Dean’s Fellowship. 

-Will Vignovich and Gavin Stonehouse for their excellent presentation on Dichanthelium for the Illinois Native Plant Society.

August 2017, The total solar eclipse comes to Carbondale, and with it the eminent Drs. Mark Whitten and Fabiany Herrera, as well as family.  Young Henry makes his first hike through Little Grand Canyon and we are visited by a famous botanical blogger (http://www.indefenseofplants.com/).

August 2017, The first Upper Delta Biodiversity Scholarship Summer Institute in Pickwick Landing State Park, funded by the S-STEM program of NSF.
